She is therefore guaranteed a seat in the provincial Legislative Assembly.

The other candidates were Gwendoline Dirk of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Barry Morishita of the Alberta Party, Bob Blayone of the Independence Party and Jeevan Mangat of the Wildrose Independence Party.

The seat became vacant a month ago when Michaela Frey, a member of the United Conservative Party (UCP) legislature, resigned.

Danielle Smith won the leadership of the United Conservative Party early last month, but she had not been a member of the legislature since 2015.
