“The rainbow jersey suits Mathieu well [van der Poel]but it would suit me too. This is my big dream.” These words from Tadej Pogacar after winning his third Tour de France, on July 21 in Nice, show to what extent the Slovenian hopes to add his name to the World Championship list. He is the big favorite for the road race (273.9 km), Sunday September 29 (at 10:30 a.m., live on France 3 and france.tv) around Zurich (Switzerland), on a route which should suit him perfectly.
Tadej Pogacar must, however, be wary of serious rivals, starting with the title holder, the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel. The Belgian Remco Evenepoel, world time trial champion last Sunday and double Olympic champion in Paris, the Swiss Marc Hirschi, in great shape and competing at home, and the French Julian Alaphilippe, crowned in 2020 and 2021 and in clear recovery in form in recent weeks, are also worth watching. France presents itself at the start with a team capable of influencing the race, Alaphilippe being supported by David Gaudu, Valentin Madouas, Romain Bardet, Pavel Sivakov and Romain Grégoire.
