Air conditioning contributes to global warming and consumes a lot of energy. Would it be better to opt for fans at home or at work?
Faced with the heat wave, fans and air conditioners are widely used. On the other hand, their effectiveness and their impact on the environment are not the same. A retiree chose both for her apartment in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes). A fan in the bedroom and an air conditioner in the living room. The two devices do not consume the same amount of electricity. Indeed, the air conditioner is much more energy-consuming and it also has harmful effects for the environment.
In France, air conditioning is responsible for nearly 5% of CO2 emissions. By sucking in the hot air from the buildings that they reject outside, these machines contribute to the warming of the atmosphere. In a store specializing in household appliances, many customers are aware of the risk to the planet. So they choose ventilators. In 2020, 800,000 were sold in France, twice as many as in previous years. More than a quarter of French households are equipped with air conditioning, a figure which tends to increase.
