One in four young people live below the poverty line in France. To deal with this situation, the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle will create social assistance intended for young people aged 16 to 25 in very precarious situations.

This aid of 500 euros per month for six months, called “youth emancipation income”, will be paid from the first half of 2024. It is not conditional on having a project. This Friday, elected officials from the Meurthe-et-Moselle Departmental Council will have to decide on this aid proposed by the local executive, according to France Bleu Sud Lorraine.

Help already experienced in Loire-Atlantique

Since July 2022, this device has been tested in Loire-Atlantique. A young person under the age of 25, without resources or family support, can receive aid of a maximum of 508 euros per month, for four renewable months. In the department, more than 500 people were able to benefit from it. “There is a minimum old age in France, but there is no minimum youth.” underlines Michel Ménard, the president of the Loire-Atlantique department.

“One in two young people leave the system after 4 months. The first lessons show that there is no assistance.”

Thanks to this system, Raphaël, a resident of Loire-Atlantique, was able to start studies. Before receiving this assistance, the young man lived with his mother in a very isolated hamlet. She only receives an allowance of 500 euros. His father dies, and Raphaël drops out of his general high school. “The young income helped me a lot, he testifies, I was able to make my daily trips, carpool, and buy supplies because I no longer had any. I could pay for the canteen. At the beginning, I received 200 euros then 260 until the end [du dispositif] three months ago.

From now on, Raphaël has his own place. He works part-time in a large company and earns 1,200 euros per month.
