Two weeks after the earthquake that killed more than 2,200 people and destroyed tens of thousands of buildings in Haiti, CARE calls for donations “Emergency Haiti”. “Aid is insufficient, we lack everything. Food, clothes, medicine, money”, declared Sunday, August 29 on franceinfo the deputy director of the NGO in Haiti, Muhamed Bizimana. “Some families are completely dislocated between different gathering points. Everyone’s help and generosity needs to be stepped up.”

franceinfo: What is the situation two weeks after the earthquake?

Muhamed Bizimana: The situation remains difficult. I have just returned from Grand’Anse, one of the most affected areas, where families continue to try to re-establish themselves. Some are completely dislocated between different assembly points, but without shelter, without drinking water, without food, it is always difficult. Support for these families is becoming more and more urgent.

Does humanitarian aid manage to get from the capital to the affected regions?

There are a lot of improvements, but the help is still not enough because the needs are huge. We lack everything. Food, clothes, medicine, money. The emergency remains shelter and water.

Are you helping families rebuild?

On a daily basis, there is the distribution of drinking water and the first hygienic kits to be provided. We also distribute tarpaulins for people to create shelters before rebuilding their homes. The means are limited. Everyone’s help and generosity must increase.
