Anger of farmers: aid, controls… Government announcements

Anger of farmers: aid, controls… Government announcements – (France 2)

After two weeks of anger from farmers, the government made announcements on Thursday, February 1. They involve more in-store checks.

The Prime Minister made announcements on Thursday February 1 to respond to the farmers’ protest movement. Among them, a safeguard clause: a mechanism to curb imports of chickens from Ukraine. Cereal imports could also be limited. A safeguard clause will guarantee that products treated with thiacloprid, an insecticide banned in Europe, cannot land in France.

A fund of 150 million euros for breeders

Controls will be strengthened and inspections will increase in supermarkets, but also in purchasing centers in Europe. The goal is to enforce the Egalim law, supposed to guarantee a better price for farmers. Controls will verify the origin of the products. Finally, the government announced substantial aid, with a fund of 150 million euros dedicated to breeders. These measures will cost the State 400 million euros in 2024.
