The milk sector calls on supermarkets to increase selling prices. Paradoxically, farmers’ incomes jumped, but their costs rose even faster.

The bottle of milk is more and more expensive on the shelves. It is also increasingly profitable for breeders. However, many are leaving the profession. So, does this price really pay them enough? Daniel Piegaya dairy farmer, took over the family farm 20 years ago. He sells his milk 440 euros the tonne, 70 more than in April. But in the meantime, all its costs have exploded: electricity, fuel or even fertilizer for his fields.

“Last year, I bought it for 340 euros per ton. At the moment, it is at 900 euros”explains Daniel Piegay about fertilizer. The breeder also had to deal with drought this summer. It is then impossible to let the cows feed only in the meadows. He will therefore have to buy more expensive fodder this year. Despite milk being sold at a higher price, this breeder decided to pay himself a minimum wage for 70 hours of work per week.
