Agreement between Ottawa and Montreal: $69 million to renovate housing

More than 4,700 affordable housing units in Montreal will be renovated thanks to financial assistance of $69 million offered by the federal government and the City of Montreal, announced the federal Minister of the Environment, Steven Guilbeault.

This commitment aims to “modernize and extend the lifespan” of these many dwellings across the metropolis, in addition to improving “the health, safety, comfort and quality of life” of the people who reside there.

“The homes and buildings of Canadians must allow them to live in a safe, dignified and affordable way. Renovating our homes to make them more comfortable and efficient contributes to better use of our energy resources, and will result in savings on electricity bills. This is an important step towards a fairer and greener society where everyone can find suitable housing,” said Mr. Guilbeault.

Thus, by the end of 2028, the City of Montreal will have granted between $4.6 million and $12.6 million for this project.

“With this major funding from CMHC [Société canadienne d’hypothèques et de logement] and the City of Montreal, we allow the SHDM [Société d’habitation et de développement de Montréal] to maintain in good condition, renovate, improve the energy performance and preserve the affordability of its housing stock,” added the vice-president of the executive committee of the City of Montreal, responsible for housing, real estate strategy and Legal Affairs, Benoit Dorais.
