On Saturday September 28, the prosecution opened an investigation into aggravated violence in meetings by a person holding public authority against a vulnerable person, an offense punishable by 7 years in prison.
Initially, the police officers had recorded in their handrail, upon returning from their patrol, that they had intervened in the Estall district of Papeete, following a call to 17, to provide assistance to a person with a disability. They reported that the individual, aged 48 and in a wheelchair, was “uncooperative“, “hurt“, and had held “outrageous remarks towards the police“.
According to a press release from the public prosecutor, they had mentioned that the person concerned had “injured following a fall in the street, without external intervention. This handrail made no mention of the facts revealed by the video.”
However, in an amateur video quickly shared on social networks, we can clearly see one of the police officers, identified as a 27-year-old deputy police officer, tilt the wheelchair forward, causing the man to fall face down on the ground. , then delivered a violent blow to his face, causing the victim to fall to the ground.
Saturday September 28, the four police officers (two peace guards and two assistant police officers) were placed in police custody. The agent suspected of having carried out the blows would have argued, according to the public prosecutor, “that the victim was drunk and kept insulting them. The three other police officers present confirmed this version of the facts. All four of them recognized that the handbook subsequently drawn up did not conform to reality..”
Furthermore, all four of them were laid off.
The victim, aged 48, was injured in the face, arm and knees and had an ITT of 3 days. She has, for the moment, not filed a complaint nor been heard, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
