In certain communes of Hérault, wild rabbits are classified as pests because they destroy crops. A mayor decided to raise awareness with recipe posters.

In Baillargues (Hérault), Garenne rabbits are a proliferating species. There are so many of them that the mayor of the town has put up posters accompanied by rabbit-based recipes. “The poster is there to raise awareness about the problem that farmers may encounter“, assures Jean-Luc Meissonnier, mayor (various right) of Baillargues. This campaign is controversial. If some residents seem convinced, others are scandalized.

Crops are devoured by rabbits

A few kilometers away, a farmer can no longer stand rabbits. He planted oats in the fall, but his field remains empty. On his 20 hectares, he plans no harvest in 2024, because the rabbits have eaten everything. In a neighboring plot, apple trees suffered the same fate. “There is not a single apple tree that is not affected. explains Etienne Villiet, farmer. The trunks are devoured, which worries him. In 12 municipalities concerned, Garenne rabbits are classified as pests by the prefecture.
