Against homelessness, Quebec is planning an action plan and nearly 280 million

Quebec promises to inject nearly $ 280 million over the next five years to fight homelessness, which has worsened with the pandemic. This money will be accompanied by a new action plan to support people experiencing homelessness.

A significant portion of the amount announced on Monday will be for accommodation, in particular to ensure that people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless can have a home 12 months a year.

The Minister for Health and Social Services, Lionel Carmant, wants to bring about a cultural change in the management of homelessness to promote a transition to housing.

“The purpose of the plan is to work between agencies, to have transportation so that a homeless person who arrives at a crowded resource can be moved to another resource. Throughout the year, there will be a place to be lodged. If the homeless person is ready to go further, towards independent housing, he will have the resources to support him, ”he explained at a press conference.

Entitled “Joining forces with homelessness”, this action plan is the result of two years of consultations. It comprises around thirty measures and is “more compact” than the previous one, underlined Mr. Carmant.

He promises to focus more on prevention, particularly with people leaving a youth center, prison or a dependency resource.
