Friday, June 2, a new fatal rail accident took place in India, killing nearly 300 people and injuring 900. “We are sadly used to this kind of events, even if they are not always of this magnitude”, declares the journalist Lucie Berbey, present on the spot, Saturday, June 3. “In 2021, for example, nearly 18,000 rail accidents were recorded in the country”, explains the journalist.
A gigantic rail network
“Most of the time, it is the dilapidated state of the railway installations that was singled out. This is a recurring debate in India, and the government is well aware of it. In recent years, it has invested several tens of billions of euros to renovate and modernize these facilities.“, explains Lucie Berbey. “But the task is immense: the Indian rail network is one of the largest in the world. More than 160,000 km of tracks cross the country, the equivalent of three times the French network”concludes the journalist.
