It is necessarily a very special start of the school year for the children of Conty, in the Somme. Two weeks after the tornado hit
, at the very beginning of the school holidays, they go back to school on Monday. But the elementary school was very affected: six out of the eight classrooms are now unusable and the pupils will therefore be accommodated in other buildings. “These six classes are repositioned four at the level of the college of Conty, one in a municipal building made available to them by the municipality and one at the Family and Rural House”explains Mayor Pascal Bohin, at the microphone of France Bleu Picardie.
“School transport will be organized in such a way that they can go to the restaurant at noon. It’s a temporary situation that will last about three weeks, a month, and then we will install modular structures at the back of the nursery school, which was not affected. This will make it possible, in a single place, to be able to accommodate all the students of the affected classes.”continues the chosen one.
Works made to last
Then will come the impressive work to restore the school, while the roof is heavily affected and the courtyard has been razed. “We can already say that in any case, the students will not return to their classrooms before at least the start of the next year., assures the mayor, who even mentions an even longer duration. The work has not yet been quantified.
To support parents and children, the rectorate will deploy from this Monday morning a psychological unite. “There is a small form of excitement, to be elsewhere, but she has not seen the state of the school”, says Cécile, whose daughter is in CE2. “We made the choice not to go see his school. We thought it was so violent and maybe shocking, that we were going to try to protect her like that. She goes to find her girlfriends and her friends and doesn’t ask too many questions, but she wants to go see how her class has been reorganized in the room, there is a little curiosity to see what happens next.“The children who will also be able to recover a large part of the belongings left in class, which were recovered after the storm and put under cover.
And the rest of the town?
Like the school, several public buildings were affected by the storm that passed through Cont
y: the gymnasium should reopen soon assures the town hall, with the exception of the Dojo. Between 65 and 70 homes were also damaged, sometimes very heavily. The town hall has requested a classification in a state of natural disaster. “I have never seen so many insurance experts and roofers in the town”explains Pascal Bohin. “I hope that everyone will find their account there. And then that we will be able to restart a normal life.“
