The sanction fell on Monday April 11 for Atletico Madrid. The reigning Spanish champion will play his Champions League quarter-final second leg against a partially empty stadium on Wednesday, April 13, for his quarter-final against Manchester City.
UEFA had opened, on Friday, a disciplinary investigation because of the “discriminatory behavior” of some Spanish supporters during the first leg on April 5, as well as for “throw of projectiles”.
The Madrid club, defeated 1-0 in England in the first leg, will have to designate the closed sector(s) before the match, “which must include at least 5,000 places”, specifies the disciplinary body of the European body. In addition, the Madrid stands will have to display “a banner reading #NoToRacism” (no to racism, editor’s note), “with the UEFA logo”, adds the organization.
The Spanish daily Marca, for its part, broadcast a video showing Madrid supporters giving Nazi salutes in the stands of the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday April 5, 2022. According to the Manchester Evening News, the Mancunian police arrested several people and opened proceedings for racism and violence.
