If the war in Ukraine continues in the east of the country, the Russian army has evacuated the kyiv region and the north of the country for two weeks. The Russian military left behind thousands of unexploded devices, and sometimes even booby traps. The 20 Hours was able to follow a team of deminers.
To a hundred kilometers east of kyiv (Ukraine)in the village of Nova Bashan (Ukraine) recently liberated by Russian troops, another anxiety has set in among the inhabitants. Ukrainian deminers are indeed requested ceaselessly, because the Russians left behind explosives. “Missiles, mines: in the two surrounding villages alone, there are at least 10,000 explosive devices”says one of these deminers.
The demining team goes to a wheat field outside the village of Nova Bashanwhere a Ukrainian fighter jet was shot down about a month ago. A part of a missile which remained, and contains very dangerous explosive charges, is destroyed by the team of professionals. The fighting in Ukraine has left behind thousands of unexploded ordnance.
The Russian troops also left many traps before leaving. “The Ukrainian government estimates that the area to be inspected, possibly demined, represents no less than 300,000 km2: half the area of France“, concludes the journalist Marc De Chalvronspecial envoy to Nova Bashan.
