Wednesday, June 7, the day after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam (Ukraine), the populations are destitute. On the spot, the rescuers try to help them as well as possible with rudimentary means.
A few kilometers from Kherson (Ukraine), an entire city was swallowed up by the waters. In some neighborhoods, the water rose more than three meters. The streets turned into rivers, trapping thousands of residents. “We are used to bombings, but such a disaster is a nightmare”, testifies a survivor. According to the Ukrainian authorities, more than 17,000 people must be evacuated as soon as possible.
An ecological disaster
Only, the operations are complicated. The fighting continues, despite the floods. The emergency services use the means at hand to help the most vulnerable. “Evacuations are continuing. 1,700 people have been evacuated in the city of Kherson”, explains journalist Stéphanie Perez, in duplex from Ukraine. She specifies that “the inhabitants are impatiently awaiting the decline”. The journalist also indicates that “more than 150 tons of gasoline were spilled”. This raises fears of an ecological disaster.
