After the bug, time for the mea culpa. Canal+ “apologize” to subscribers who were unable to see the PSG-Juventus Turin match on Tuesday due to a technical problem on its myCanal application, the causes of which are still unknown, one of its managers told AFP on Wednesday September 7. Tuesday, around 9 p.m., many customers complained on social networks that they could not follow PSG’s entry into the Champions League.

According Frank Cadoret, deputy general manager of the Canal+ group in charge from Canal+ France, Wednesday’s incident “probably impacted a limited number of customers”perhaps in an order of magnitude of “100,000 or 200,000”. The group draws this conclusion from the “very strong audience” achieved by the match despite the incident, 1.73 million viewers on average on Canal+ (more than 2 million if we add the Canal+ Foot channel, with a peak of 2.3 million).

This kind of incident can come from‘”a capacity problem when there are many clients connecting”, said Frank Cadoret. But “We also do not rule out the possibility of malicious intent because our servers are sized” for such an influx. “At this stage, it is a little premature to be able to give the exact cause, we are investigating”, he said, as Canal broadcasts another French club match in the Champions League, Tottenham-OM, on Wednesday evening.

“We have customers who were happy to watch the match, we are there to entertain them, not disappoint them and bring them frustration”he added, assuring that Canal+ was going to do “the appropriate commercial gestures according to their offer”.
