After those from the Arcachon basin, oysters from Normandy are now prohibited from marketing and consumption. Producers estimate their losses at several million euros.
A feeling of injustice and anger. After oysters from the Arcachon basin (Gironde), those from Calvados and Manche are also prohibited for consumption. A massive blow, a few days before New Year’s Eve. A Gironde oyster farmer has filed a complaint against Siba, the wastewater sanitation network in the Arcachon basin. “We cannot call it inevitable. (…) Whether it rains a lot, for a long time or not, we must be able to manage“, he believes.
More than 8 million euros loss
After the new bans, the entire French industry is now worried. The oyster farmers of the Thau basin, in the Hérault department, want to be reassuring. “Consumers risk confusing the Arcachon basin production site with the Mediterranean. (…) Afterwards, it is up to us to explain that each production site is completely different“, explains one of them. Producers in the Arcachon basin currently estimate their losses at more than 8 million euros.
