Albon missed the Italian Grand Prix due to appendicitis. The operation was successfully performed on Saturday, but Albon had to be transferred to intensive care afterwards because of this respiratory failure, the Williams team said in a statement on Monday.

Williams added that his situation improved greatly overnight from Saturday to Sunday and that the assisted breathing was stopped on Sunday morning.

The team said he had not suffered any other complications.

Albon is recovering from this incident and is aiming to race the next Singapore Grand Prix on October 2.

The Thai has four points for Williams this season. The team granted him a contract extension of several seasons last month.

Albon was replaced by reserve driver and Formula E champion Nyck de Vries. The Dutchman finished ninth to collect points in his first F1 race.
