The sanction fell for Udinese. After the racist insults uttered on Saturday against the French goalkeeper of AC Milan, Mike Maignan, the Italian club was ordered to play a match behind closed doors, the disciplinary committee of the Italian Football League announced on Tuesday January 23.

“The sports judge decided to sanction Udinese with a match behind closed doors in view of the referee’s report, as well as the report of the representatives of the federal prosecutor’s office, concerning the acts of racial discrimination aimed at on several occasions, during the match, AC Milan player Mike Maignan, and which led to two announcements in the stadium, as well as a first interruption of around a minute, then a suspension of play for around five minutes.explains the commission’s press release.

A spectator banned from stadium for life

Saturday January 20, while the 16th in Serie A welcomed AC Milan, the French goalkeeper Rossoneri, Mike Maignan, had been the target of monkey cries and racist insults from certain Udinese supporters during the first period of the match. The goalkeeper of the France team left the field, imitated by his teammates, and the match was interrupted for five minutes before resuming.

The day after the match, the French goalkeeper, who had already been the victim of racism in stadiums twice since his arrival in Italy in 2021, published a press release. He pointed there the responsibility of part of the supporters as well as that of the Udine club and called “the authorities and the prosecutor” to react.

On Monday, Udinese announced that one of the spectators who uttered racist insults had been identified and banned for life from its stadium.
