He is one of the most prolific French serial killers. In the 1970s, Charles Sobhraj is said to have killed around thirty people, mainly tourists traveling through Asia. He was given the nickname “Serpent” for the fact that he managed to manipulate his victims, evade the police for a long time and escape from prison on several occasions. On December 21, 2022, the highest court in Nepal, the country where he had been imprisoned for almost 20 years, ordered his release on health grounds. Two days later, he was released and arrived the next day by plane in Paris where he was taken care of by the police and his lawyer Isabelle Coutant-Peyre. The latter also reports that her client would be “very fit”.
The lawyer also announced that the serial killer plans to sue Netflix. Indeed, in 2021, his story inspired a series produced by the BBC and broadcast on the famous platform. Title The snakeit retraces the career and alleged murders of Charles Sobhraj in the 1970s. But, according to Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, this program “gives him a completely falsified reputation” and “there is only 30% truth”.
In her defence, the killer’s lawyer also said her client’s life sentence in Nepal would be “suspicious”. She claims that her release is not due to the health problems of the septuagenarian (Charles Sobhraj is now 78 years old, editor’s note), but rather to the fact that an “upright president of the Supreme Court (of Nepal), has found that the conviction itself was suspicious […]. So here we are, we always give humanitarian and health reasons to cover up… But Charles Sobhraj is in very good shape and we are going to prepare a new procedure against Nepal”. Isabelle Coutant-Peyre also claimed to have “all the evidence now that the file was fabricated by the police”.
