Former US President Donald Trump was found guilty on Thursday, May 30, of having disguised payments in order to buy the silence of former porn actress Stormy Daniels. He is going to appeal and he denounced a rigged trial.
It was in Manhattan (New York, United States) that Donald Trump addressed his supporters on Friday May 31. “I’m leading the presidential polls, and they’re trying to gag me through a White House-run tribunal”, said the former president of the United States. The Republican candidate cries injustice the day after a historic conviction. He was convicted of hiding payments of $130,000 to pornographic film actress Stormy Daniels to buy her silence just before the 2016 election. This criminal conviction is unprecedented for a former president.
Outside the court, Democratic activists exulted. “I am relieved because it means that our democracy can still be saved”, said an activist. The conviction does not prevent Donald Trump from running in the presidential election at the end of the year. “It’s sad but the judges managed to unite us even more, ordinary people will see how this man is persecuted”, explained a pro-Trump activist. The Republican candidate will know his sentence on July 11 but he has already announced he will appeal.
