2023 is a year full of emotions for Ed Sheeran. The British singer released a highly anticipated brand new album on May 5 entitled “-” (Subtract). An event for his millions of fans that the 32-year-old artist accompanied with a huge Arena tour, in the United Kingdom: Manchester, London, Glasgow, Dublin but also in Paris where he performed on April 2 . A new opus in which the singer returns to the simplicity of his beginnings, accompanied by his only guitar, he tackles very personal themes such as fear, depression, the loss of a loved one… dark ideas as if to better close a chapter of his own story, he, the happy father of two children. Prosecuted for the plagiarism of a work by Marvin Gaye!
However, lately, it was less a question of talking in the media about his new album than of the civil lawsuit for plagiarism of the song Let’s Get It On by American Marvin Gaye. Indeed, Ed Sheeran was being sued by the heirs of songwriter Ed Townsend, who created this soul classic in 1973 with Mr. Gaye. According to them, the title of the British artist Thinking out Loudhad so many similarities with Let’s Get It On that it violated the song’s copyright protection. But fortunately, on May 4, the jury of the Manhattan federal court, which had to judge this difficult copyright case for ten days, found that Ed Sheeran had created his song “independently” and that his 2014 planetary hit, Thinking out Loud was therefore not a partial copy of the famous Let’s Get It On du no less famous soulman Marvin Gaye. During his testimony on the stand, the English singer repeatedly picked up a guitar placed behind him to show how he created “mashups” (crosses, editor’s note) of songs during his concerts in order to “spice it up a bit” his show for his large crowds. “And frankly, if I had done what you accuse me of doing, i’d be pretty dumb to stand on a stage in front of 20,000 people and do this.” The court ultimately ruled in his favor.
