The deadly cyclone Mocha, which hit Burma on Sunday May 14, plunged the population into great precariousness. Water has become extremely precious, and some say they can no longer feed themselves.
In the Burmese state of Rakhine, devastated by Cyclone Mocha on Sunday, May 14, humanitarian aid arrives in dribs and drabs. In Sittwe, the regional capital, sewage treatment plants are at a standstill and drinking water has become a rare commodity that only the richest can obtain. “I’ve been queuing for water for 30 minutes already. […] There are still a lot of people ahead of me. I just want two cans of water“, despairs a resident.
“I haven’t eaten for four days”
Food is also lacking. In a monastery in the city, residents register to receive their ration of rice, distributed by the World Food Programme. “I haven’t eaten for four days. I have no more bowl, no plate, no house, and I don’t even have clothes to change into. I’m here to ask for rice because my family is starving“, testifies a woman. The UN ensures that negotiations are underway with the Burmese military jungle to obtain free access to the disaster areas.
