after a month of war, more than one in two inhabitants needs humanitarian aid

Twenty-five million people, or more than one in two Sudanese, need humanitarian aid, the UN announced on Wednesday May 17, after more than a month of war between the army and the paramilitaries. To date, the fighting has left more than a thousand dead, around 840,000 displaced and 220,000 refugees.

The UN has increased its appeals for funds, saying it needs 2.6 billion dollars for aid to the country. Added to this is nearly half a billion dollars to help refugees who have fled to neighboring countries. These refugees will be more than a million in total this year, the UN predicts.

Before April 15, when fighting began between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane’s army and the paramilitaries of General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), one in three people suffered from hunger in this country of 45 million people. Today, food is becoming increasingly scarce. In Khartoum, the capital where five million people live, those who have not fled are holed up in their homes, forced to ration themselves and are short of money because the banks are closed.
