Afghan intelligence on Sunday said it had seized around 3,000 liters of contraband alcohol which it dumped into a canal in Kabul, with new Taliban authorities severely cracking down on the sale and consumption of alcohol.

In a video published by the General Intelligence Directorate (GDI), the special services of the Islamic Emirate (name given by the Taliban to their regime), several uniformed agents are shown emptying several barrels into a canal.
The GDI said in a statement that 3,000 liters of alcohol had been seized and destroyed after an operation in a district of the Afghan capital, during which three men were arrested.
“Muslims should really refrain from making and supplying alcohol,” one religious scholar said, speaking in the video.
The sale and consumption of alcohol were already banned under the previous Western-backed regime, but the Taliban, known for their very rigorous view of Islam, have stepped up the repression since taking power in mid-August.
The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice has also issued several recommendations reducing women’s rights.
