They left Afghanistan for Scotland. Four young women who could no longer study are now continuing their studies at the University of Glasgow.

Four young Afghan women are now studying at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. They never thought they would be in the room reserved for medical students. “I am so happy to be able to resume my studies because my dream is to become a doctor”assures Masuma Zakii. In Afghanistan, since the return of the Taliban in August 2021, women have faced many prohibitions, including that of studying.

“Becoming a surgeon in my country could be something beneficial for me and Afghan society”says Zahra Hussaini. A British foundation enabled them to reach Glasgow. They had to negotiate a trip to Pakistan and then obtain the necessary visas. In Scotland, the students have access to accommodation, a bank account and free training. Proud of their achievements, they want to send a message to all Afghan women who cannot leave the country. “Stay optimistic and don’t lose confidence”advises Fariba Asifi. Only 19 young women were able to reach Scotland to continue their studies.
