Aegis Rider is a technological start-up working on the helmet of the future: at Vivatech, Nicolas Ribeyre and Laurent Giraldon wanted to discover this product which uses augmented reality for more safety.
You can turn on or off all the driving aids, racing lines, braking points and these indications will allow you to master the physics of the video game. Here we are not in a video game, Aegis Rider wants to take augmented reality on motorcycles to another level, and we are not just talking about a head-up display or a smart helmet, but a computer system who can tell you exactly how to drive to stay safe.
Swiss engineers in development
Aegis Rider is based in Switzerland and was born out of a research project at ETH Zurich. This new technology uses three components to complete the system. The first concerns the rider’s display system which will certainly be integrated into the helmet in the long term. There is a computer security system attached to the motorcycle which interprets all the data. The final component is the sensor suite, which serves as the eyes of the system. The sensor system consists of a camera, a GPS unit and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The sensors transmit data to the computer which makes it possible to carry out an optimal trajectory prediction in real time and an AI-assisted calculation which makes it possible to better perceive the environment where the motorcyclist is riding. The rider then receives the calculated information on the head-up display which tells him what to do through a set of augmented reality instructions. In practice, the system strives to keep the rider safe, by identifying obstacles, turns and other road hazards, processing the data, then sending the best and safest course of action via the head-up display. The system even tells you the lean angle you need to take the turn, as well as the optimal position in the lane. For the moment, the product is in the test phase, and the commercialization will take place shortly after the end of the tests. The Prototype is by far the most advanced helmet we’ve seen with a head-up display, compared to other helmets on the market, such as those that use a system simply intended to warn and direct riders.
