An advisor close to the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army was killed on Monday, November 6, in the explosion of a “unknown machine”, announced the military official on the social network Telegram. This object was located “in one of the gifts” sent to the victim for his birthday.
Valery Zalouzhny clarified that a preliminary investigation had been opened. The death of Gennady Chastyakov constitutes “a heavy loss for the Ukrainian armed forces and for me personally”, he regretted again in a press release published on Instagram. He says he feels “indescribable pain”.
An unusual scenario
Attacks against Ukrainian leaders have been relatively rare since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. Several Russian occupation officials and supporters of the Russian assault have already been targeted by attacks.
Last April, a famous Russian military blogger known as Vladlen Tatarskiï was killed in the explosion of a statuette received as a gift in Saint Petersburg, in the northwest of Russia. This case recalled the death, in August 2022, of Daria Douguina. The daughter of Russian ultranationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin, a fervent supporter of the Russian invasion, died in the explosion of her father’s car.
