With the return of good weather, Saturday April 13, it is recommended to be wary of the baïnes on the Gironde coast. Decryption with Patrick Meiffren, mayor of Carcans (Gironde), on the 19/20 info set.
Patrick Meiffren, mayor of Carcans (Gironde), does not report any cases of swimmers caught in baïnes this Saturday, April 13, despite a large number of people. To raise awareness on this day of maximum risk, the town hall has “renewal[é] precautionary advice”specifying not having “the financial means to monitor [les] beaches all year round, and not in this season either”. They will be there from the weekend of May 8 “for all the big weekends” from May then from June to mid-September.
Don’t panic
The mayor of Carcans (Gironde) explains that he was informed of the maximum risk alert by the authorities on Friday. “It’s a bit complicated to recruit lifeguards to put together a complete team to equip a first aid station and monitor”he adds.
Although he recognizes that swimming in the baïnes is tempting, particularly because of the mild temperature of the water in these gaps, he calls for vigilance: “When we find ourselves at mid-tide, (…) extremely violent currents are created.” Patrick Meiffren recommends in the event of a problem not to panic or try to swim against the current but to “just let yourself float” And “carry with the current”because the sea will eventually bring bathers back to the beach.
