Leylah Annie Fernandez’s journey ended in the round of 16 at the tournament in Adelaide, Australia. The Quebecer came up against an Iga Swiatek in full possession of her means and lost in two sets of 6-1 and 6-2 on Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old has never been in the game against the fifth seed. Fernandez got into trouble quickly in the first inning, being broken at 2-1 and 4-1.
It was serving plays and unforced errors that killed Fernandez. The finalist at the last Australian Open won only 58% of her points in first serves and 26% in second. For his part, Swiatek was dominant with 84% success on the first ball, not offering any break point to his opponent and not committing any double faults.
Nevertheless, even if Swiatek offered her no respite, the Quebecer fought to the very end, in particular saving three match points at 5-1.
She had defeated Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova on Monday, but the challenge was going to be difficult against the former champion of Roland-Garros. The Polish will face the winner of the duel between Victoria Azarenka Priscilla Hon, the slayer Petra Kvitova in the first round.
