Adapt, for French | The duty

For years, the subject concerning the teaching of French at the college level has been debated in all corners of Quebec. However, even if the Minister of Higher Education affirms that the government makes it a priority, the students do not have this feeling.

The problem, according to a student of natural sciences, is that since many students are successful, teachers spend almost no time helping those who are having difficulties, because they tend to think that if others can do it, they can easily do it too. In the Report of the committee of experts on the mastery of French at the college levelrequested by the ministry, the authors point out that one in four students fails their first French course at CEGEP.

It is possible that some blame the younger generation for the decline of French due to new technologies and increased student workload. However, while lack of time may be a valid reason, it is important to note that many students express the need for training that is practical and relevant to their daily lives. Thus, to rekindle the enthusiasm for French, it could be wise to revise the content of the courses and adapt it to the current needs of the students.

The educational needs of students change from generation to generation. It is important to listen to them and adapt the teaching accordingly, even if it involves changes that we are not used to or that we do not like.
