Actress Golshifteh Farahani is starring in “Rokya”, in theaters Wednesday May 15. A thriller where she plays a hunted woman who resists, a role which echoes her personal story as a refugee, she who had to leave Iran and who became a voice for the diaspora.
Like the music she listens to while walking, cinema is soothing for her. Iranian singer and actress exiled in France since 2008, Golshifteh Farahani symbolizes female emancipation. In her new film, she plays a woman accused of witchcraft who fights for her survival. “It’s an ancestral feeling that I have, when we are in refusal, when we provoke, we try to live our singularity”she explained.

A few weeks ago, Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi was sentenced to death for openly anti-regime lyrics. “It really is the height of ignorance”said Golshifteh Farahani. “We must ask all artists in the world to take a stand because art is about inspiring and bringing people together”she added.
