Actor Matthew Perry, who played Chandler in the series Friends, has died at the age of 54

Matthew Perry passed away at the age of 54. The actor, best known for playing Chandler Bing on Friends, was found dead Saturday in a home in the Los Angeles area, TMZ reported, citing police sources. Police sources who also confirmed the death of the American star to the Los Angeles Times.

The media also indicates that Matthew Perry was found in a jacuzzi at home and that no drugs were found on the premises. Drowning? A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told PEOPLE that officers did respond to a distress call to Perry’s address regarding the death of a man in his 50s.

TMZ was informed that there was no criminal act, and their sources indicate that first responders were called to the residence for a cardiac arrest.

Despite his international success with the group of Friends which included Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry has long battled old demons off camera. He told British radio station BBC Radio 2 in 2016 that he did not remember filming seasons 3 to 6 of Friends.

In a lengthy interview with PEOPLE in 2013, the actor admitted to abusing alcohol and Vicodin, which a doctor prescribed to him after a jet ski accident in 1997. “I had a big problem with the alcohol and pills and I couldn’t stop,” he confided. “Eventually things got so bad that I couldn’t hide it, and then everyone found out. Then “something clicked” and the star founded Perry House, a sober living center for men, in his former Malibu Beach home. “The interesting reason why I can be so helpful to people now is that I made mistakes so often,” he explained. “It’s nice for people to see that someone who has had difficulties in their life is no longer struggling.”
