Actor Bernard Hill, known for his roles in ‘Titanic’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ dies at 79

The British actor was due to return to TV screens in the second series of “The Responder”, a BBC drama starring Martin Freeman, which begins airing this Sunday.

Actor Bernard Hill died at the age of 79 early this Sunday, May 5. Information announced by the BBC and confirmed by his agent Lou Coulson.

He was best known for his roles in the film Titanic And The Lord of the Rings : he had played Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s Oscar-winning 1997 film and the King of Rohan Théoden in the trilogy adapted from “Lord of the Rings”, released in the early 2000s. He had played many supporting roles, as in At the sources of the Nile by Rob Rafelson (1990) or Found guilty (1999) by Clint Eastwood.

Born in 1944 in Manchester, the actor had worked in theatre, television and the big screen. He was revealed in the early 1980s for his role as Yosser Hughes, a unemployed in the multi-award winning BBC television series Boys from the Blackstuff, tuff.

This show won the Bafta for Best Drama Series in 1983, and in 2000 it was ranked seventh on the British Film Institute’s list of the best television shows ever made.

Bernard Hill also had a prolific career on British television. Her return was planned this weekend with the broadcast in the United Kingdom of a new season of the detective series The Responder.
