Around ten activists from the “Extinction Rebellion” movement met on Sunday October 15 early in the morning in Marcoussis (Essonne), in front of the gates of the French Rugby Federation (FFR). On videos relayed on the activists’ social networks, we can see them emptying cans of a black liquid onto the ground.

On their X account (formerly Twitter), they assert, in response to a comment, that it was “fake oil”. They then placed rugby balls and brandished signs displaying in particular “Total keep your dirty money”while chanting Totally guilty, deceptive polluter, you are going to have a bad time.”.

Their action aimed to “denounce the financial support of TotalEnergies, one of the main sponsors of the Rugby World Cup, which is trying to improve its image by exhibiting it in the stadiums”, explained an activist from the Ile-de-France branch of the group, cited by AFP.

The company reacted to AFP, saying “fully respects the right to demonstrate and freedom of expression”but “deplores any form of violence, whether verbal, physical or material”. The company spokesperson added that the Mondial “is in particular an opportunity for the company to raise awareness of the multi-energy dimension of our activities and our ambition to be a major player in the energy transition, committed to carbon neutrality in 2050.”

TotalEnergies announced at the end of September that it planned “increase its hydrocarbon production by 2 to 3% per year over the next five years”while ensuring that we want to maintain “the milestone of its balanced multi-energy strategy” with its strong growth in renewable electricity.
