Emmanuel Macron took the political world by surprise. The President of the Republic decided on Sunday, June 9, to dissolve the National Assembly while the National Rally gathered more than 30% of the votes in the European elections. This announcement by the president caused astonishment among the rebellious supporters present during Manon Aubry’s election evening in Paris.
Barely time to recover from the revelation of Manon Aubry’s good score, Emmanuel Macron appears on the giant screen of the election evening of La France insoumise: “I have decided to leave you the choice of our parliamentary future…” Emotions are mixed among LFI activists and sympathizers: dismay, joy, worry… But above all the desire to jump straight into the legislative battle. “We are ready, we are ready”, chants the crowd. But not everyone is so euphoric at the idea of this dissolution. Stéphane has a worried face: “We are faced with the risk of an RN government. It is really Macron who is playing the scorched earth strategy and we cannot afford it.”
Many activists fear, in fact, cohabitation with Jordan Bardella as Prime Minister of Emmanuel Macron. For Souleyman, the left can succeed in preventing this, on one condition: “The left must unite. I think Nupes is not dead.” LFI activists hope that all left-wing leaders, without exception, will succeed in putting their ego aside to form a united front against the far right.
Same astonishment among party executives. La France insoumise thought it would quietly celebrate Manon Aubry’s good score but the evening quickly took a more serious turn. Jean-Luc Mélenchon is forced to throw himself into the legislative battle: “We are in a moment of history. The history of our country has just crossed a threshold.” A question on everyone’s lips: can Nupes rise from its ashes to block the far right? Union yes, but not at any price: “It is not enough to bleat in cadence ‘Union, union, unity! Ah I’m crying, I’m afraid!’ On what basis? For what?”
The rebellious deputies are on the same line. Some are still stunned by this announcement from Emmanuel Macron. For Antoine Léaument, deputy for Essonne, the president is committing a serious mistake with this dissolution of the National Assembly: “Mr Bardella asked for a dissolution if ever he had a good score and the Macronists a bad one: Mr Macron obeys Bardella.”
His colleague Bastien Lachaud, deputy for Seine-Saint-Denis, believes that the president had no choice: “He no longer has any legitimacy to impose his ultraliberal and antisocial policies on us.” All the rebellious elected officials assure us, they will be in the campaign from Monday with the aim of inflicting a double defeat on Emmanuel Macron and the National Rally.
