“Active assistance in dying cannot be effective in 2024, from the moment the bill is presented in February“, warned Agnès Firmin Le Bodo, Minister Delegate in charge of Territorial Organization and Health Professions, this Wednesday on franceinfo.
“On a subject like this, that is not possible (…) It will take a shuttle between the Assembly and the Senate, perhaps another round trip, so it will take at least 18 months of debate“, she clarified.
First promised for the end of the summer, the presentation of the bill on the end of life has been postponed several times. The text must establish the French strategy for palliative care and also define a “French model” of active assistance in dying, namely assisted suicide and/or euthanasia. For the moment, the head of state has not commented on this last aspect.
The ten-year strategy on palliative care will be announced in the second half of January 2024.
