The legal troubles of two players from the French XV continue in Argentina. They are due to be heard by the courts on Friday 12 July after being transferred the day before from Buenos Aires to Mendoza. They are accused of sexual violence by a woman who has just been hospitalised.
The two French rugby players Oscar Jegou and Hugo Auragou arrived in Mendoza (Argentina) during the night, after a journey of some 1,100 km from the Argentine capital. They are being held in pre-trial detention pending their trial. They were arrested on Monday, July 8, as part of the investigation opened for sexual violence while they were in Buenos Aires with the French team. The two players will be questioned by the courts for the first time.
According to Natacha Romana, the lawyer for the alleged victim, her client returned to the hotel with one of the two players before being raped several times. In a state of shock, she is still hospitalized and should remain under observation for between 24 and 48 hours. According to the players’ lawyer, the images from the hotel’s surveillance cameras show the victim leaving the French rugby players’ room the next morning without any signs of blows or injuries. The two players admitted to having had sexual intercourse, but denied any form of violence. If found guilty, they risk up to 20 years in prison.
