Will Spotify be able to calm the controversy? Accused of leaving the field open to disinformation on Covid-19 in its podcasts, the Swedish audio streaming giant announced measures on Sunday January 30. The lack of reaction from the company had pushed the folk musician Neil Young, followed by singer Joni Mitchell, to remove his discography from the platform.
The CEO and founder of the world number one in the sector, Daniel Ek, announced measures in the evening, including the introduction of links in all his podcasts evoking the Covid. These links will guide its users to factual and scientifically sourced information. Spotify has also made its rules of use public and says “test ways” report more to podcast creators “what is acceptable”without directly mentioning the possibility of sanctions or exclusion.
It was Neil Young who initiated the movement against the group, asking them to stop hosting the controversial, but very listened to, American animator Joe Rogan, number one in listening to podcasts on Spotify last year. Joe Roganwhose contract signed last year is estimated at 100 million dollars, is accused of having discouraged vaccination among young people and of having pushed for the use of an unauthorized treatment, ivermectin, against SARS-CoV-2.
