Three drivers are in critical condition following a collision that occurred Monday on Highway 30, in Bécancour, in Center-du-Québec. Two other people suffered minor injuries.
The Sûreté du Québec indicated that the accident which occurred in the afternoon involved five vehicles, namely a car, a van, a 53-foot truck and two 10-wheel trucks.
“The heavy trucks caught fire,” explained Éloïse Cossette, a spokesperson for the police force. They carried rocks and grain. The Quebec Ministry of the Environment was contacted due to the fuel spill at the scene.
According to initial information, one of the vehicles in question ended up in the oncoming lane, added Ms. Cossette. “Is it due to a mechanical problem, a bad maneuver or an overtaking gone wrong? The expertise and the investigation serve to clarify these aspects,” she said.
Highway 30 has been closed in both directions between avenue des Jasmins and rue des Glaïeuls for an indefinite period.
