Accessible outdoors in Quebec

This text is part of the special book Plaisirs

Finding holiday ideas that can suit everyone is not easy. In Quebec, the Kéroul organization assesses and supports tourism and cultural businesses in their accessibility approach. In addition to Parc national d’Oka, recognized for its inclusiveness, here are three places that have obtained the “accessible” rating managed by Kéroul.

The Kaaloo Estate, Upper Laurentians

Three tourist establishments in the riding of Labelle, in the Laurentians, have just received financial assistance to promote their accessibility to people with physical disabilities, including Domaine Kaloo. On the banks of the Kiamika River, one of the four chalets on the Chute-Saint-Philippe site, called La mésange d’Olivier, is currently adapted for people with reduced mobility. The entire ground floor as well as one of the four bedrooms are accessible to wheelchairs: access ramps, wide doors, low cupboards… The bathroom has also been designed to ensure holidaymakers’ independence.

An access allows to go to the river. “They also have an adapted chair with a lift at the dock for kayaking,” says Faustine Maréchalle, communications and marketing manager at Kéroul. Often the problem we have is that there is no lift. »

Les Chalets Baie Cascouia, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean

Very popular with residents of the region, Lake Kénogami attracts water sports enthusiasts. Among the many accommodations at Chalets Baie Cascouia, in Larouche, is Le Tricia, which is fully accessible. “The kitchen is adapted so that a person in a wheelchair can cook at the right height,” says Mme Marshal.

In addition to the terrace and barbecue, a ramp goes down to the beach, where a mat prevents the wheels from sinking into the sand.

Good to know: there are cheese dairies, vineyards and other gourmet stops nearby.

Camping Aventure Megantic Reviews, Eastern Townships

Rather looking for out-of-the-ordinary accommodation? Since February 2023, the Apodis ready-to-camp at Camping Aventure Mégantic can accommodate up to seven people. It is close to other units of its kind, thus facilitating reunions with family or friends. “It’s a new pod accessible, points out Faustine Maréchalle. They linked two to make a bigger one. It is accessible all year round. »

Moving between the kitchen — with a clear counter —, the bedroom, the living room and the bathroom with a walk-in shower is easy. A patio door leads outside and roast marshmallows around a raised fire pit. Please note that pets are accepted.

What do we mean by “accessible”?
