access to the Pignada and the Lazaret prohibited due to the high temperatures

While a heat wave has settled over the entire south-west, the City of Anglet has decided to prohibit, for an indefinite period, access to the Pignada forest and that of Lazaret. Actual decision since this Friday, June 17 (6 hours). The drought noted in particular at the level of the undergrowth accentuates the risk, linked in the vast majority of cases to the behavior of walkers. A measure taken while many still have in mind the fire which ravaged 80 hectares of the massif on Thursday July 30, 2020.

Concretely, any form of activity, walking or otherwise, is prohibited there. Municipal police and firefighters carry out regular surveillance rounds. Failure to comply with the prohibition may result in a fine, “but we are more in a pedagogical procedure, especially after the trauma experienced two years ago”, concedes Damien Duhamel, director of municipal services of Anglet. Especially since in a few days, the forestry brigade will be back to monitor the massif.

Crisis unit

Measures have also been taken, as part of the alert with the triggering of the heat wave alert. A crisis cell is set up at the Anglet municipal center for social action. It can be reached on 0 559 587 272. The members of the various departments that make it up, contact the people who have registered on the register of vulnerable persons. Without an answer, they can ask a family member or a neighbor. In addition, a number has been launched: 0 800 0800 928, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Reforestation in the fall

Regarding the reforestation plan, 90,000 trees over 75 hectaresit will be presented at the start of the next school year to the English inhabitants, and launched from october. The consultation was carried out from October to December 2021. The maritime pine will still be there but the cork oak, more resistant to drought and the risk of fires, will become more important in terms of percentage.
