The Pilat dune, neighboring the forest devastated by one of the two fires that affected the Gironde, will again be accessible to the public from Wednesday July 27, the prefecture announced on Tuesday. The Teste-de-Buch forest fire, which broke out two weeks earlier, notably destroyed 7,000 hectares near the largest dune in Europe, as seen in satellite images.
Visitors will be able to access “in secure conditions and with guided paths”ensures the prefect of Gironde Fabienne Buccio in a press release. “They will have to arrive by bus, because the flames have damaged the parking lot of the site”specifies the mayor of La Teste-de-Buch, Patrick Davet.
If the two Gironde fires have been declared “fixed” Monday they are not entirely extinguished. “In the absence at this time of sufficient security, access to the burned massifs remains prohibited”warns the prefect. Departmental road 218, which connects La Teste-de-Buch to Biscarrosse (Landes) along the dune, will remain closed until the roadway and surroundings are completely secure.
