The government of Quebec announces the deployment of a short training course to equip itself with a thousand new home care support workers by fall 2024.
This is a very interesting initiative since it makes it possible to attract, train and provide the network with workers who will lend a helping hand to an overloaded network that is failing everywhere.
Not an isolated case
But this is in addition to several accelerated training announcements launched in recent months. It all started with the chore of training valuable beneficiary attendants during COVID. Since then, we have developed short-term training courses for carpenters, construction equipment drivers, tinsmiths, refrigeration specialists, and now home support workers.
- Listen to the political meeting with Yasmine Abdelfadel and Marc-André Leclerc via QUB :
One of two things: either the usual training courses were unnecessarily long, expensive and outdated, or the accelerated training courses are superficial, incomplete and of lower quality.
Otherwise, how can we justify that all of a sudden, when we are experiencing a labor shortage, we are able to quickly train professionals at high speed?
A future generalization?
Obviously, today we prioritize the sectors where the needs are most pressing: construction, health and education. We do this punctually and sparingly. But should we review all of the training leading to in-demand professions in order to prune, update and shorten them? Let us think in particular of training linked to the catering industry, information technologies, accommodation, tourism, transport, etc.

The question is valid. Because according to our politicians, accelerated training makes it possible to respond effectively to the needs of our economy. We must also not neglect a significant risk: that of creating two classes of employees, those trained according to the traditional program and those trained hastily.
More than ever, we should dust off the training offered and create a simple class: that of competent professionals, adequately trained, motivated and recognized for their true value.
