Acadian singer Cayouche dies at age 75

(Montreal) Acadia is in mourning: country singer Cayouche died Wednesday, at the age of 75.

He would have requested medical assistance in dying to relieve his pain caused by cancer.

Cayouche, whose real name is Réginald Charles Gagnon, was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, in 1949.

He released his first album, titled An old hippy, in 1994. His first record, which he self-produced with his friend and manager Jean-Marc Dufour, was recorded in a studio in the Caraquet region. He was then living in Burnsville.

Four more followed: Half half in 1996, Roll, roll in 1999, Last call in 2003 and The reminder in 2011.

Even though he has not released new songs since 2011, he continued his career on stage until 2023, notably participating in the Tracadie megashow last August.

After going into exile in the United States with his mother at the age of 13, he returned to Canada in 1979, when he was 30 years old.

He lived in Maisonnette, in the Acadian Peninsula.
