Channel: the strike renewed at Mont Saint-Michel – (France 2)
Some of the employees at Mont Saint-Michel Abbey have been on strike since December 26. She was taken back to the morning of Saturday January 6. The strikers are demanding a salary increase, more staff and better working conditions.
With three million visitors per year, the Mont Saint Michel is the most visited monument in France outside of Paris. But on the morning of Saturday January 6, visitors found door closed. They appear understanding. “You know, me I am a screenwriter at The bone Angeles and we just came out of a six month strike against Hollywood. So I understand them, there must be a reason”estimates a visitor.
A lack of staff
After an hour of waiting, the doors open. Due to the strike which has lasted for twelve days, the visit is free. The agents complain about their working conditions in a cold, austere building, but also about a lack of staff which, according to them, penalizes the reception of visitors. “In our house, we would need about six more people.”judge Carlos Da Silva, CGT delegate from the abbey. The monument remains open with hours that change from day to day. There management has promised three recruitments by next July, as well as financial recognition of the conditions of difficult work.
