A young man is fighting for his life in hospital after being hit by a car on Saturday at the exit of the Ville-Marie tunnel, around 4:15 a.m. in Montreal.
The victim had just got out of a broken down vehicle when the inevitable happened on Route 136, which is also known as the Ville-Marie Autoroute at this location, just before the exit on Boulevard Saint- Laurent / rue Berri.
“According to initial information, a Caravan would have come to a standstill on the side of the road after a mechanical failure, heading east. A 22-year-old passenger then got out of the vehicle and it was then that the driver of a sedan came and grabbed the 22-year-old pedestrian. The latter suffered serious injuries that put his life in danger, ”said agent Nicolas Scholtus, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
The 31-year-old man who was driving the sedan was arrested for impaired driving. He was released on Saturday and will appear at a later date.
“The driver of the sedan exposes himself to criminal prosecution, in particular for having driven a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and causing bodily harm to an individual,” said Officer Scholtus.
SQ investigators and accident scene reconstruction experts were dispatched to the scene to investigate and three out of five lanes of this eastbound section of Route 132 were closed to traffic until around 9 a.m. h 30.
Officer Scholtus also reminds motorists to use the utmost caution when they have to stop in fast lanes, as in this case.
“People are asked to stay in their vehicle until the emergency services arrive,” said the spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec, especially since the Ville-Marie tunnel is equipped with surveillance cameras from the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ).
