At 7:15 a.m. this morning, the grid delivered 40,510 megawatts of power to Quebecers waking up to a freezing morning. This new mark erases those recorded on Friday, January 21, of 40,380 megawatts and on Tuesday, January 11, of 39,994 megawatts.

Prior to this year, the previous all-time high for electricity demand was January 22, 2014. Thursday morning’s new all-time high may hold for some time as temperatures have started to rise and January draws to a close.

Hydro-Québec has several tools to manage the winter peak, including dynamic pricing and the voluntary interruption of certain industrial activities, such as supplying greenhouses and cryptocurrency activities.
