A work by Jean-Paul Riopelle stolen 17 years ago has been found

A work by the famous Quebec painter, engraver and sculptor Jean Paul Riopelle was found by the police in a residence in Mirabel, north of Montreal.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) carried out a search there in July after receiving information from citizens.

The police then got their hands on a lithograph that was allegedly stolen on June 30, 2005 during a break-in at the artist’s studio in Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson, in the Laurentians.

At that time, four works had been stolen. Three are still missing and wanted by the police.

The SQ could not confirm for the moment if charges would be brought against the owners of the residence where the lithograph – in the colors of gray, black and yellow and surrounded by outlines of birds – was found.

Born in Montreal in 1923 and died in 2002, Jean Paul Riopelle is one of the greatest artists in the history of Quebec and Canada. The works of this Refus Global signatory can be seen in many museums here and abroad.
